TRAIN ALONGSIDE THE BEST

Our Founder

Hi, I’m JB Burnley, and I’m the founder of Mongrel Martial Arts. Martial Arts is my life-long passion. Welcome to our Gym!

“I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it.” – Picasso

This is how I feel every day that I train in the Martial Arts. I see something that is complex, yet simple. Beautiful, yet devastating. Inspiring, yet humbling all at the same time. I want to push the boundaries of my physical and mental limits, and Martial Arts does that for me… I soon learned, with the push of my Instructor, to share my journey and passion with others… And so, Mongrel Martial Arts was born.

Coach Jon “JB” Burnley is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu 1st Degree Black Belt under Rick McCoy (MMA Institute / Gracie Barra). As a veteran of the 82 nd Airborne, Coach Burnley brings a high level of attention to detail and game planning to the table that is second to none. As an avid competitor, Coach Burnley knows and understands how to prepare students for competitions and how to better position them to succeed. Coach Burnley’s open-mindedness and exploratory nature when it comes to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu lead to him making basic techniques sharper and more effective, in addition to being innovative and adding new wrinkles to the art.

Some of Coach Burnley’s accomplishments include;

Jesse Marez

My name is Jesse Michael Marez. I began my Martial Arts journey in 1984. I was a huge comic book fan and always wanted to be a superhero. I knew I would never be able to fly, shoot lasers or block bullets. But I thought maybe I could train to be like Daredevil, Iron Fist, Moon Knight and Nightwing.

This began a long love affair with studying martial arts and accumulating black belts in traditional martial arts, including a Black Belt in Shaolin Kenpo, 1st Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do, Black Belt in Champions Martial Arts and 1st Degree Black Belt in Shorin Ryu Karate.

But my true love was in grappling. It was through Scientific Wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu that I found my true passion. My grappling journey has the following highlights:

  • Received my 2nd Degree Black Belt in BJJ under Pete Sutton (2017). Lineage: Helio Gracie > Royler Gracie/Vinicius Aieta > Vinny Magalhaes > Peter Sutton > Jesse Marez.
  • Coach at 10th Planet Sacramento and Black Belt in 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu.
  • Head Coach in Scientific Wrestling under Billy Robinson and Jake Shannon
  • Three Year Assistant Wrestling Coach at Martin Luther King High School in Riverside, CA, under Harlan Kistler.
  • Licensed to teach Folk-style Wrestling under the American Sport Education program, Interscholastic Federation and the Division of Human Kinetics
  • Scientific Wrestling Head Coach (ranked by Billy Robinson, Dick Cardinal, Wade Schalles and Jake Shannon)
  • Western Combat Arts Certified Head Coach (only person West of Mississippi as of 2012) under Mark Hatmaker
  • IBJJF Black Belt
  • SJIFF Second Degree Black Belt

John Ward

My continual journey in Martial arts Started when I saw a flyer for “Blood Sport Fighting” in Mike’s Olympic Gym back in 1995 when I was a competitive teen age Body builder. After training under Gary Miles (American Style Kickboxer and Karate) AKC (Ralph Gracie BJJ school and Bart Vale Japanese Shoot fighting, Sakasem, Ponch from Belmeade Boxing) I fought in the first “Vale tudo” (only gloves and mouth pieces, you could even headbutt then) in Va. Beach Beating the 155lbs champion out of Miami. Earned a Blue Belt in BJJ. And trained alongside fellow teammates Rick McCoy and David Womack. We worked heavily on all aspects BJJ. Sombo, Shoot fighting, Boxing and Muay Thai.

Early 2000’s till present. I was one of the Striking and MMA Coaches for David Womack with Richmond Fight club and Total Victory. Where I helped train striking with other great names David Silopath and Seph Smith, Dwayne DZO Shelton. And for the past 13 years I was one of the Striking Coaches for Rick McCoy at MMAI sister school to Mongrel. I had the absolute pleasure of working and training tenacious
hard hitters like Michael “Tailor made” Wade, Donny “One Speed” Ooton, Tyus Thomas and David “Shotgun” Gladfelter. I have a love for guiding people through the tough times to succeed in the goals that they want in all levels of their martial arts desires, from the novice to the Pros. I enjoy using the talents God gave me to bestow unto others.

Mongrel has stoked the fire to teach. I love the family atmosphere that has everyone wanting to help each other. Top notch guys and gals and JB is a salt of the earth Practioner and owner who only wants the best for his Mongrel Kennel family.
